“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This is a scripture that most of us have heard at some point throughout life. Life has a way of showing us just how much we are NOT in control of certain aspects of life. Instead of trying to dodge negative experiences, it would behoove us to know how to be prepared to handle them. As imperfect beings, it is inevitable that we will make mistakes and fall short in life but when you fall down, you have a choice to stay down or to stand back up and learn from your experiences. I want to share a personal story in an effort to encourage you to recognize your self-worth, prioritize things in your life, go after what you want, remain faithful, and to keep God first.
I have always aspired to be a professional dancer, model, and actress. Yes, we all know that in 2015, nearly everyone wants to work in entertainment but I had a true passion for it. At about, 15 years old, I was told by a family member that I wouldn’t succeed as a dancer because there’s no future in it. It’s bad enough that I have outsiders who discourage me but my own family? This really lowered my self-esteem and I actually gave up on the idea of ever working in the entertainment industry. In 2004, I was selected to be a part of a prestigious dance company called Planet Funk. It was then that I realized that I was capable of doing great things with my talent. I was given the opportunity to train with celebrity choreographers and I met some really talented individuals, some of who I still communicate with today. To make a long story short, the family member who doubted me was, all of a sudden, “team Naomi.” This opened my eyes and taught me a lesson that people, even family, will only be supportive when they see you doing good.
The point of that story is to show you that you have to do you! No matter what people say, no matter how someone feels about you, you have to do what’s best for you. Step outside your comfort zone because success isn’t something that is easily achieved. If you want something different, you have to be willing to do something different! Start with yourself. Make a list of the things you want out of life and every day, do something that will bring you closer to scratching items off that list. Some of us go through life as if we have forever on this earth. Every morning that God allows you to see life, do something productive and make the most out of life. I don’t care where you come from or what you’ve been through, EVERYONE has the power to be great. I know this because God is great, and if we are made in his image then that must mean that we too are great. God will bless your life if you let him.
